Ephrata Fire Department Volunteer Receives Governor’s Award
Brian Slater honored April 20th at Governor’s Mansion
EPHRATA — Ephrata Fire Department volunteer Brian Slater was recently honored with the 2009 Governor’s Volunteer Service Award for Outstanding Volunteer of National Service Programs in Washington State.
Along with about 50 other volunteers from around the state, Slater, an EFD public educator under the department’s Fire Corps program, received the award from Governor Christine Gregoire at the Governor’s Mansion on Monday, April 20th. The award is intended to recognize outstanding performance of individuals who contribute to their community’s emergency preparedness programs.
Slater was nominated by Ephrata Fire Chief Jeremy Burns, who wanted to recognize Brian for his outstanding contributions to fire and life safety in the Ephrata area.
“Brian has added an extra layer to our fire and life safety education programs,” said Burns. “He has selflessly donated many hours to educating school age children and bringing the community together to emphasize fire safety. He is an outstanding volunteer, and we are very proud of him.”
Fire Corps offers volunteer opportunities to support local fire departments and to contribute to the four stages of emergency management: preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery. With the added support of citizen volunteers, emergency service providers have more time to fulfill their highly skilled responsibilities to make our communities safer, stronger, and better prepared.
